Skills in Demand (SID) Visa (Subclass 482): As of now, the Australian government has only started giving out the Skills in Demand (SID) Visa (subclass 482). On December 7, 2024, it took the place of the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) Visa. By making it easier for qualified individuals to come and work in Australia, this visa also aims to alleviate the country’s labour market shortages.
There will be more leeway, fewer obstacles, and more defined routes to permanent residence thanks to the SID visa, which radically alters the skilled migration system.
Skills in Demand (SID) Visa (Subclass 482): Key Features and Streams
The SID visa system consists of three streams, each designed for individuals with varying levels of competence and wage thresholds:
1. Specialist Skills Stream
- Highly trained professionals with a minimum yearly income of $135,000 are the target audience for this visa.
- Aside from tradespeople, equipment operators, and labourers, it is also available for the majority of ANZSCO jobs.
- Provides expedited processing with a seven-day turnaround.
- The plan also provides a route to permanent residence as well as four years of visa validity.
2. Core Skills Stream
- This programme focuses on workers with the necessary skills for positions on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL).
- Pay must be at least $73,150 per year, with increases tied to changes in Average Weekly Ordinary Time Earnings (AWOTE).
- Participants in the programme are also eligible for permanent residence, and their visas are good for up to four years.
3. Labour Agreement Stream
Workers sponsored by particular labour agreements between companies and the Department of Home Affairs are eligible to participate in the Labour Agreement Stream of the initiative.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for any stream of SID visas, applicants need to fulfil certain criteria:
- The ideal applicant will also have worked full-time in the field for a minimum of one year in the past five years.
- An IELTS score of five or above (with a minimum of five in each section) is required to prove that the applicant is fluent in English.
- The person is perfectly healthy and has the required moral fibre.
Benefits of Skills in Demand (SID) Visa (Subclass 482)
You can also change employers without starting the process of becoming a permanent resident with the mobility provisions of an SID visa. You can also travel within and outside of Australia, bring family members who can work or study with you, and you have up to one year to find new sponsorship if your job ends.
Pathway to Permanent Residency
Regardless of whether you change employers, every full-time sponsored work on the SID visa counts towards permanent residence eligibility under the Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186 Visa).
